OPEN: APSC 172 Calculus Extended Program – May/June 2024 - in person

The course is on engineering economics and a background in this subject is essential; applicants should have previously taken this course or an equivalent.

TA duties will primarily be marking online assignments and tests and posting grades in OnQ.  Marked assignments and tests must be completed such that they can be returned to students within one week of the submission date.  Duties may also include helping to prepare assignments and responding to student remark requests.  Marking guides will be provided, and any necessary training will be included. Marking of the final examination will begin immediately after the exam is written, the date and time to be determined by the Exams Office. It is expected that all marking will be completed, and marks posted by Monday August 12th at the latest.

Remuneration for Undergraduate TA positions is $20.86/hour and will be for a total of 60 hours of work spread over the term.

CLOSED: APSC 103 Communication Assistant- Winter Term

All undergraduate students are invited to apply for a Teaching Assistantship as an Assistant for the course APSC 103 in Winter 2024. APSC 103 is a first-year course in engineering design where students are encouraged to tackle open-ended problems as they work directly with a community partner in addressing a specified need. Professional experience and comfort in the subject of professional communications is essential as well as evaluating students critically in this area. You can read more about APSC 103 here.

Assignment duties will include grading student projects from a communication perspective, entering the grades in OnQ and meeting with students to review their work and to provide feedback. Attendance at training sessions is mandatory. Marked assignments are expected to be completed and returned with relevant feedback within one week of the submission date. Marking guides will be provided and any necessary training will be incorporated.

Fourth year status (or above) and successful completion of APSC 100 and 200 (or 202) is required.

Remuneration is $20.86/hour plus 4% vacation pay. Estimated time commitment is 60 hours for the term, (Exact hours depend on the number of teams allocated)

CLOSED:  APSC 200/293 Engineering Design and Practice II/Engineering Communications TA – Winter 2024 term

Fourth-year undergraduate students are invited to apply for an Undergraduate Teaching Assistantship (TA) in APSC 200/293 for Winter 2024.

The courses are related to design and communication, so strengths in these areas are strongly preferred.  Students from all engineering and applied science disciplines are welcome to apply, although some background in chemical engineering, engineering chemistry, geological engineering, or mechanical engineering would be advantageous.

TA duties will include assisting students during design and communication workshops, providing guidance and feedback to design project teams, marking assignments, reports, and presentations, and entering grades. Any necessary training will be included in the TA assignment.

The employability skills that are considered important and that will be further developed by this position include:

  1. Technical writing
  2. Communication and presentation skills
  3. Teamwork abilities
  4. Confidence and ability to work with others as well as independently
  5. Self-motivation, initiative
  6. Time management

Applicants chosen for an interview will be asked to complete a writing assessment, and successful applicants must have demonstrated the high level of technical communications and English proficiency required for these positions.

Winter term TA contracts run Jan 1 – Apr 30, 2024.  Remuneration is $20.86/hour plus 4% vacation pay. Total hours may range from 60-80 hours per term, depending on assigned section and duties.

TA duties will primarily be marking assignments and tests, and proctoring the two evening midterms on-campus 6:30-8pm on Tues January 30 and Tues March 5.  Marked assignments and tests must be completed such that they can be returned to students within one week of the submission date.  Duties may also include monitoring and responding to online Q&A forums and student emails and posting grades on onQ.  Marking guides will be provided, and any necessary training will be included in the assignment.

Marking of the final examination will begin after the exam is written (final exam date will be during exam period April 11-25).  TAs will need to be available on-campus for a specific day to mark the papers after the exam is written.
